Becoming Your Own Best Friend

There is no one who you will spend more time with than yourself. How does that statement feel? Maybe it feels daunting, or perhaps joyful. It probably depends on how you’re feeling about yourself in this particular moment…kind of like your relationship with your best friend.

Often when people think about becoming their own best friend they think it’s supposed to be sunshine and roses all the time; but that’s simply not reality. I know that I’ve had moments with my best friend where I’ve wanted nothing more than some time apart! This is all a part of healthy relationships, yet when it comes to our relationship with ourselves we set these unreasonably high expectations.

Is it awesome to be with yourself some days and you walk around feeling like you rock? Absolutely!
Are there some days when you feel like you want to crawl out of your skin and can’t stand to be around yourself? Yup, those days happen, too.

Recognizing this is key. There’s nothing wrong with you if you feel frustrated with yourself sometimes. It’s not abnormal to not be in love with yourself at every minute of every day. You’re not supposed to always be overjoyed with yourself.

Like any other relationship, the relationship you have with yourself will have its ups and downs. If you build that relationship on a solid foundation of trust, forgiveness, self-kindness, compassion and courage, you’re creating a something that will last for the long-haul.
