3 Delicious Healthy Foods You Can Grow at Home

Staying fit does not necessarily mean having to spend a whole lot of money. What matters is that you make smart and practical choices regarding what you eat. A good starting point is to learn about healthy foods you can grow at home. Not only will this save you money, but it also allows you to learn about where our food comes from. With that in mind, we’ve identified three foods that are good for both your wallet and your body.

#1 Tomatoes

Whether you treat them as vegetables or fruits, tomatoes will always be one of the best-tasting and healthiest foods you can plant in your own backyard. With their adequate levels of calcium and Vitamin K, tomatoes help your body to efficiently repair and fortify bones and bone tissue.

Likewise, tomatoes fend off dangerous substances such as carcinogens because they have chlorogenic acid and coumaric acid. If that’s not enough, tomatoes also have high levels of Vitamins A and C that deal with antioxidants damaging our cells and tissues.

Growing tomatoes is simple. First, you pick a sizable pot that can accommodate the root system of tomatoes. If the huge root system grows without any problems, a tomato will grow optimally. Of course, make sure that it has holes at the bottom for drainage.

Now, let’s talk about the soil. Instead of picking garden soil or potting soil, you should opt for a potting mix since it is relatively light and it’s unlikely to contain fungi and pests. Next, go buy tomato seedlings. Plant these in your pots and provide them with water and sunlight every day. Eventually you can learn how to plant tomato seeds instead of just seedlings.

#2 Avocados

You might have heard from others that avocados should be avoided because they contain fat, but there’s nothing wrong with consuming a healthy type of fat. Avocados have monounsaturated fat which may reduce the chances of developing a heart disease. In addition, monounsaturated fat helps your body absorb various vitamins including A, D, E and K.

Even avocado seeds themselves are good for you because of their high antioxidant content. Just include these seeds in the blender for your next fruit shake. Moreover, this food is packed with magnesium that improves your mood and helps you relax and sleep better.

So, how do you grow avocados at your home? First, you need to get an avocado seed and let the roots and stem grow by exposing an inch of the seed to water but not to sunlight.

In as early as two weeks, the roots and stems should be thick and healthy enough to be placed in a pot. The container should measure at least 10 inches in diameter and you should use humus rich soil. Furthermore, the avocado plant must be regularly watered and exposed to sunlight.

Eventually, you can transfer your avocado plant into a larger container and let it grow as a tree. The best time to grow avocado trees is between March and June. These are the months when the temperature is adequately warm and there is sufficient humidity for the avocados to thrive. From there, just be patient. It can take up to three years until the first fruit appears.

#3 Strawberries

Strawberries not only have an incredible taste, they are also full of health benefits. This fruit does not have any cholesterol and virtually no fat. Strawberries also have high amounts of free radical-fighting antioxidants. They are also loaded with fiber to ease digestion and improve nutrient absorption.

Strawberries are simple to plant, but you should take note of both the soil and the location. They shouldn’t be grown in windy areas since insects will have a hard time pollinating the flowers. Similarly, the location should not be prone to frost in the winter season.

As for the soil, it should not have been previously planted with potatoes or tomatoes since the soil might have the disease known as verticillium wilt. Another thing to remember is that strawberries are grown best with a soil PH between 5.5 to 6.5.

Once you find a good place for your strawberry patch, you can plant them directly into the soil. You can opt to plant them in rows without any containers which is the conventional method of planting strawberries.
