The Healing Power of Hoop Dance & What I've Learned About Healing

A little over 3 months ago, I found the healing power of hoop dance.

I can say, without hesitation, that it has changed my life.

It has healed me in a way like nothing else ever has.

It seems silly, right? Hula hooping? Really?! Yes. Really.

Maybe you've never tried it, maybe you haven't since you were small, maybe you know someone that hoops, maybe YOU hoop... but inside this little circle of light, I found myself again. (If you're a hooper, I know you totally get this & I see you.)

I'm still a baby hooper, I'm not all that graceful yet, I still have a million & one moves to learn, I still struggle with maintaining flow... but none of that matters.

What matters is the journey & I adore it.

I'm still stretching & getting cozy inside this practice but 3 months into it, hooping almost every day, it has healed so much in me already. Old issues, everyday issues, mama issues, body issues, anxiety, stress, overwhelm... *POOF* - it's fuckin' magic.

The movement, the music, the dancing -- meditative, energizing, playful.

Honestly, it just may be my desired form of creative expression. That's a pretty big statement considering I dabble in just about everything under the sun, heh.

I'm leaning into that truth with love though. I'm gonna ride it out & see where it takes me.

I'm not quite ready to share the entire story surrounding my journey yet but today, I am giving you a peek, I'm showing you, that feels right in this moment.

I'm feeling a little vulnerable about the video, even though my hoop practice sessions are only acting as a background behind what I've learned to be true about healing... it still feels scary.

I had to remind myself that it's usually when I feel most afraid that it's exactly what I should be sharing.

I created the video to support the launch of WomenHeal : an online alliance... there's a message for you over there, I'd love for you to hop on over & read it & show them some support!

WomenHeal: an Online Alliance

Since the beginning of October, Team WHOA (WomenHeal Online Alliance) have been rolling out gorgeous blog posts in preparation of their 2013 launch.

WHOA has one mission – to create a safe space where women can collectively encourage growth & healing for themselves, each other & the world. Creating a tapestry of brilliance & creativity that stuns with both its beauty & strength. Ringing with clarity, laughter & love.

The beautiful site was envisioned & created by Christa Gallopoulos from Carry It Forward & co-created with Beatriz Alemar, its "Midwife of Magic."

If you'd like to learn more, you can visit their Mission Page, support them by contributing to their IndieGoGo Campaign & connect with them on Facebook & Twitter.

This project is absolute beauty, I'm honored to take part in their launch.

Wishing you ladies boatloads of love & rooting for you as you bring it to light. Thank you Christa & Bea!

Deep Love, Respect & Gratitude, xox,

Hi Katie, thank you! Have you tried an adult hoop? I didn't even know they existed a few months ago. They are larger & heavier & make things so much easier. If you are interested in learning more I can comment with some info, no pressure, just putting that out there. Good day to you! <3!

I was so transfixed by your hooping I didn't realize there were words LOL. I had to back up and rewatch. You are ROCKIN' it.

Maureen Blake said...

ohmygollygosh. wow. what joy it was to watch this video. Like others have commented, I had a hard time taking my eyes off you in order to read the words, but I did outloudgiggle when I saw "jollification." I just got my first hoop a couple weeks ago, thanks to my dear daughter Amanda Fall introducing me, I think via YOU, sweetotherAmanda. And ya know what my favorite part of the video was? near the end, when you let us see times when the hoop escaped your hands . . . don't we miss so much raw beauty when we sanitize our views of things and edit out what some might mislabel as "mistakes?" I have a plaque that reads "when you stumble, make it part of the dance." not "when you stumble, get up and start dancing again." And my version might read "when you stumble, embrace it as part of the dance." Anyhoo, dearotherAmanda (as in not daughterAmanda :)), thank you boundlessly for sharing so freely.

Amanda, I watched twice. Once to bask in the loveliness of the hooping and once to read the words. You never cease to amaze and delight my soul. KOM is exactly the right place...at exactly the right time - always. Much love to you darling.

"When small shuddering bodies grow beneath our skin". Beautiful. Took me right back to feeling that first movement inside my belly. Reminding me today what a privilege it can be to bear and nurture a child. Hearts breaking elsewhere. Healing thoughts here. Thank you. I've never heard of hoop dancing, but it looks wonderful. Looks like I need a bigger house or a garden to make room for a hoop - or the fearlessness to teach myself on the beach. xx

This is absolutely stunning. I was so captivated by your movement - flowing with such grace and beauty - I found it difficult to stop and read the words accompanying them! I cannot thank you enough for sharing this. You mentioned feeling apprehensive about it and I need to thank you for sharing that as well because, you see, to hear that someone is doubting themselves, but does it anyways and not only does it but OWNS it and still manages to exude such goddess like motions & confidence.. that helps me. That helps me to hear that - that maybe it's possible for me to look that way from the outside too, no matter what's going on inside. So thank you. Keep going. Please, for all of us. Keep going.
