Spin Your Story : Turning The Bad Into Good

Spin Your Story guest post by Bee Bosnak of Beeyond Yoga.

Turning The Bad Into Good

I’m sure you all have heard the question: Why do bad things happen to good people?

It seems to be the case that life doesn’t discriminate between good and bad, the faithful and the faithless, the criminals and the saints. Otherwise, why do bad things happen to good people?

Why does an entire village get wiped out in a hurricane? Why does a mother lose her son, why does a very hard working woman get fired, why do innocent people die or get injured as they collide with a drunk driver, why does a yogi fracture his toe during Padangustasana??

Why Why Why Why Why Why Why Why Why Why Why Why?

But what if we found the answer? What if someone came along and gave us a satisfying explanation? What if the mystery were finally solved? What if we asked why, and actually got an answer?

If this ultimate question were answered, then we would be able to make peace with the suffering of innocents. And that is unthinkable. Worse than innocent people suffering is others watching their suffering unmoved. And that's exactly what would happen if we were to understand why innocents suffer whether it be physically or emotionally. We would no longer be bothered by their cry, we would no longer feel their pain, because we would understand why it is happening.

Imagine you are in a hospital and you hear a woman screaming with pain. Outside her room, her family is standing around chatting, all smiling and happy. You scream at them, "What's wrong with you? Can't you hear how much pain she is in?" They answer, "This is the delivery ward. She is having a baby. Of course we are happy."

There, that’s your answer... now what?

When bad things happen sometimes we think we’re being punished in some way, or if trauma is lingering we think there’s something wrong with us, leading to greater shame and disappointment. But have you ever considered turning the bad into good? Have you ever thought about checking your pockets for fish when you fall in the mud puddle? Has it crossed your mind to turn negative energy to a new perception, a new way of thinking or a new moon?

It’s not what you do or how you act when everything is going right. It’s what you do and how you act when everything is not. That is how you can spot success. Think about it.... It’s easy to be happy and positive when everything in your life is happy and positive.

Happiness: You just bought your dream home, you earned a well deserved promotion, you were finally able to do a handstand, you just graduated university with an honours degree.. etc etc

Now the opposite:

Sadness: Your offer on your dream home got declined, you got fired, you fell on your face twice while trying arm balances, you failed your exams.. etc etc.

Think about your reaction to these very basic situations that happen daily in every single country.

So how do you turn something bad into something good?

Of course, I am no guru to answer this question. I am a forever student in life whether I’m on my mat or off. However, due to my current studies in Yoga Teacher Training, I’ve become more aware of my surroundings and of myself. It’s sort of like stepping outside of your body for a minute and scanning your soul from earth to sky, your emotions, your handling mechanism and giving yourself a good old nudge if need be.

When something bad happens, surround yourself with something good. Good people and a good environment is a great place to start. Or perhaps when you find yourself doing the "ordinary," be determined to make it "extraordinary."  You, your attitude and your perspective is what makes the difference. Like energy attracts like energy. Really evaluate what are you putting out and what are you getting in?

See it, seize it and just remember, whatever situation you are faced with it’s all about your attitude that is reflected by your powerful thoughts.

The majority of us lead quiet lives

The majority of us lead quiet, unheralded lives as we pass through this world. There will most likely be no ticker-tape parades for us, no monuments created in our honor. But that does not lessen our possible impact, for there are scores of people waiting for someone just like us to come along; people who will appreciate our compassion, our unique talents. Someone who will live a happier life merely because we took the time to share what we had to give. Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have a potential to turn a life around. It's overwhelming to consider the continuous opportunities there are to make our love felt.

Dear You : Poetry by Julia Fehrenbacher

Poetry by Julia Fehrenbacher of Painted Path.

DEAR YOU

you, the one reading these words
you, with your ancient, wanting heart
you, wondering if you'll ever
get it right

I invite you to pause
for a moment
and listen to the space
between
these words
to the space where softness
rests
and hunger
fades

to the space that so
gently
asks you to
stop
the thoughts
that doubt your worth
to stop the voices that compare
and leave you feeling
less

There is no less
there are no shadows or shoulds, no pretty or good
no bad or broken, no right or wrong in
Love

There is only this breath
and that which breathes it
there is only You
and your giggling, fully blossomed
Self

ready
ready right now
to shine
its newborn
ancient
just right
Light

Spin Your Story : The Mirror

Spin Your Story guest post by Jeff Winston of Tap Your Truth.

The Mirror

The alarm clock propels me out of bed at 5:30 to turn off its grating tone. Having to actually get out of my warm cozy bed to stop the maddening sound forces me to choose between continuing the forward progress to a more productive day, or making the deliberate and guilt producing choice to retreat and actually get back in. Needless to say, a half hour later I am in the gym, "running" like a gazelle on the elliptical, trying to lose the uncomfortable fifteen pounds that four years of stress and emotional eating helped to add onto my five foot six inch frame. I actually enjoy exercising as I'm able to go deep within, past the verbal and into the wordless music pouring out of the headphones to invigorate my soul. I thrive off of the live, improvisational and impeccable musicianship of the Grateful Dead or Phish, as they consistently remind me how empowering and rewarding authenticity and taking risks can be.

Back to the gazelle on the elliptical, and after forty-five minutes I climb off the machine and then up the stairs to stretch. Mirrors on every wall of the room reflect back the reality of the situation. Personally, I love mirrors; my childhood home on the outskirts of Philadelphia had a floor to ceiling mirror in the living room, in front of which my brother, my friends and I would perform lip-synched music videos (this was the 80s when MTV actually provided and inspired artistic and creative video expressions of music; I'm not bitter.)

Rather than avoiding them, I actually like looking at myself in the mirrors at the gym. And I don't believe it's as much ego-based as it is reality-based. Over the years, I have learned to be accepting of who I am and how I look without honoring, too much, the self-depreciating voices of judgment. Having done yoga for many years, I am pretty aware of and in touch with my body, (that doesn't mean that I'm not also aware of how delicious ice cream, pizza and french fries taste), but looking straight on at myself today, I am seriously caught off guard by what is reflecting back at me...My sweat-stained shirt. Some audible expression of awe effortlessly escapes my lips as I see my sweat-stained shirt, which is in the perfect shape of a heart. Not a shape that kinda-sorta looks like a heart, but a full-on perfectly formed beaming out of and through me heart which instantly creates a sense of true clear understanding of so many things on so many levels, none of which will I even attempt to explain because any word would diminish the experience. What I can tell you is that in that moment, I tapped into my truth...and my truth was love and calm and compassion and peace. This was not as much a revelation, as it was a reminder. I was raised within unconditional love, and, understanding that I am one of the lucky few in this world to have experienced that for so many years, I have done my best to pass it forward in both my social and professional worlds.

We all are worthy of being loved and accepted for the beautiful creatures we are. We all are capable of inspiring others with our words...our art...our selves, but so often we get walled off behind our fears, our doubts, and our can'ts, usually set solidly in place by our family and our peers at a young age and reinforced by the false realities our society embraces. Everywhere we turn we're bombarded by propaganda on billboards, magazines and television to make us feel not as beautiful, not as intelligent, and not as important as the (fantastical and fraudulent) images they project. Which brings me back to the gym. For, instead of filling my brain and consciousness with the negative and materialistic images on all eight televisions, I look straight ahead, into reality...into, the mirror.

Silent thoughts are roots

Your silent thoughts are like the roots of a plant. They remain hidden in the dark recesses of the earth, but from them stems the whole plant--its life and form, its strength and beauty. From them and through them the plant lives and dies. So, too, your thoughts, although hidden, are your real, vital force.

Finding a Kind Faith with Rachelle Mee-Chapman

Guest Post by Rachelle Mee-Chapman for the Kind Kindred series.

Press play to listen to this post (it's gorgeous!):

Finding a Kind Faith

Listen, what I want to tell you is this.

It is not kind to force your soul into a religion that does not love you back.

It does not matter that it was the faith of your fathers. It does not matter if it nurtured you for many, many years. It does not even matter if you made promises to it somewhere along the way. If the religion of your past is bruising your soul in the present, you are not doing yourself a kindness by staying there.

If you are in love with your current faith incarnation;
If you are supported and understood by your religious community;
If your faith is serving you well—
you don’t need to read this.
Here is a kiss for you as you go on your way. (Kisses, sweet friend.)

But...

If you are hard-pressed to speak your truth in the place where you are supposed to find God;
If you have to be silent in what was supposed to be your sanctuary,
If you are hiding your true beliefs in order to belong—
then come with me.
Come with me and be kind to the little baby soul that lies within you, waiting, waiting for something good to get born.

You can find a spirituality that fits. You can create a set of beliefs that you are able to say out loud, without cringing—to anyone anywhere—because they are so deeply 100% yours. You can gather a tribe that will allow you to stand in your truth—a tribe who will not nod and “hmmm” at you in apparent support, while inwardly worrying that you are losing your religion. You can find withmates who will journey with you as you move through the questions.

This kind of re-creation will take imagination. It will take experiments, and laughing at your mis-steps. It will take saying hard goodbyes. It will mean taking a leap over the chasm and holding on to nothing but hope while you wait to see if land with a roll and a giggle on the soft green grass of the other side.

If your religion is a voice in your head telling you that you are too fallen to be worthy;

If you hear on endless repeat, the message that your beliefs, your abilities, your efforts towards goodness are not enough, are never enough:

If the bedrock of your self-understanding is that you are from birth, wrong

This is not kind. This does not serve you well. For if your faith is not kind to your soul, how can you in turn to be kind to this world? And the world needs you. You—full of kindness.

It is not indulgent to create a right-fit faith. It is not a rebellious to want spiritual practices that don’t leave bruises. Choosing to be kind to your soul is not sinful, or selfish. It is a saving grace – for you, and for those around you.

Come with me my friend, into a new kind of spirituality. It’s time to be kind to your soul.

Wild:
Living in a state of nature; not tamed.

Sister:
Being or considered a sister; related by or as if by sisterhood.

Being wild means embracing your light & your dark, to be your complete, beautiful, perfectly imperfect self.

Being a sister means connecting with your kindred spirits, lifting each other up, sharing your truth & standing together.

Being a wild sister means listening to your heart & following your dreams.

It means living your passion, loving yourself unconditionally & being a force of good in this world.

It means believing in yourself; no matter what others say or how many challenges the world throws at you.

It means letting go of the past, embracing the present & trusting that everything happens for a reason.

It means facing your fears, making mistakes & creating your own path in life.

It means speaking your truth & liberating others to do the same.

It means being real, authentic & free. It’s standing barefoot on the grass, dancing amongst the trees, singing from your soul, chasing rainbows & howling at the moon.

It’s jumping off the cliff & building your wings on the way down.

It’s all this & so much more.

Come & be wild with us.

Doesn't that sound amazing!?! I can't wait to meet you there!

It makes room for everything

Water is patient; it can stagnate and let itself be coated with scum if need be. It is as gentle as the morning's dew. It is non-confrontational, even respectful, in circumventing the rocks in a stream. It makes room for everything that enters its pools. It accommodates by assuming the shape of any vessel it is poured into. And it is humble, seeking always the lowest level. Yet along with - or rather because of these adaptive, yielding properties, it is ultimately irresistible; it carves canyons out of stone.

improving the lot of mankind

It may seem to your conceited to suppose that you can do anything important toward improving the lot of mankind. But this is a fallacy. You must believe that you can help bring about a better world. A good society is produced only by good individuals, just as truly as a majority in a presidential election is produced by the votes of single electors. Everybody can do something toward creating in his own environment, kindly feelings rather than anger, reasonableness rather than hysteria, happiness rather than misery.

Speak Your Truth : Free Printable + Deep Gratitude

right click, save as:
Hopi Elder Prayer - PDF

Printable Faux Watercolor Art Print

I have no idea how to begin this. Truthfully, I am without words, it is all feeling. The love that you have shown my family & I has been incredible, breath-taking, inspiring, insightful & FELT-- deep. We are embracing your love. There's a lot of love in our home but your extra loving goodness & support... it lifted a weight. We needed it & we are immensely grateful for all of it.

Zenin went to his first speech therapy session yesterday. Up until now we were doing everything in our home with the help of an amazing team of professionals, preschool teachers & occupational therapists who specialize in speech. We are taking things as slow as Zenin needs them to be. In the past 6 months he has made awesome progress, so much so, that I lost count of how many words he has said or can say. Once in a great while he'll bust out with a two-word phrase & my heart just swells with so much love & pride. Like just a few weeks ago, I was lying on the floor, he was standing over me, I said, "Zenin, look at you, you're so tall!" He said, "I tall, I tall, I tall!" -- instant tears. He is magical & I am standing in the power that I am his advocate, his voice, for now. I trust myself to know what is best for him because I have paid close attention to his cues since before birth. Any mother that is reading this right now knows that gut feeling, that knowing, that comes with mamahood. It's fierce & I trust it.

Though I'm pretty certain I won't be able to reply to all the comments & emails I received, I read them, every single one of them. I'm serious when I say that I have a total love hangover today & that's not a bad thing at all. I am so blessed to be part of this amazing community. So blessed. Thank you for being you. Thank you for rockin' this life with me. Thank you for your encouragement, recognition & wisdom. Thank you for making this a safe place for all of us to share our truths. Please know that you are appreciated & loved.

I'm in the middle of the river, lighter, floating... & I see you--

& I am celebrating our strength.

Spin Your Story : Honoring Creative Spiritual Women

Spin Your Story guest post by Belle Pirri of Creative Spiritual Women.

I asked Belle:

When did your spirituality & creativity get married?

She answered: I believe my creativity & spirituality were always connected, I believe they are for everyone, but we can certainly deny that connection or simply not know about it.

When I look back now it seems obvious to me... the times when I nurtured and honored my spirituality my creativity flourished, and when I answer the call of my creativity, something stirs in my soul. I don't believe they are separate, just different expressions of ourselves, of the divine flowing through us that is part of us.

I believe it is Spirit or God or the Universe or the muse or whatever you call that great energy (I use them interchangeably) that gives us the desire to create, that inspires us with new ideas, that allows new, powerful connections to form in our minds and hearts where there was no connection before.

Acknowledging that energy, whatever you call it, is key. Your muse gives to you with her whole heart, with the desire to see her creative ideas brought into life through you. But she is not incessant, and not inefficient- if she's giving you ideas and you're ignoring her, if you're complaining about how hard it would be to create that thing, if you're bellyaching about not having enough time in your day to do everything you want to do- she will leave you alone. The creative urges will come less and less frequently, the more you prove to her you're not listening.

Thankfully, she'll come back in a flash once you start honoring your creativity in the smallest of ways. My muse knows that now, I'm much more likely to listen to her and at least try to execute her ideas. As a result, it feels like she's excited, thrilled to send me more. I have many ideas throughout the day, and I make a conscious effort to sit down and write them out (my usual creative medium) even if I only have ten minutes.

After these creative sessions, I feel alive, happy, satisfied and inspired. My spirit feels healthy, like I've just been to church or said my prayers or communed with Spirit.

In fact, I have.

I've honored Spirit's desire to flow through me, and that, I believe, is one of the greatest ways to commune with God.

Belle’s journey to her life of creativity and spirituality was one of incredible obstacles and challenges. As a result, she’s fiercely devoted to the women who have made the same trek, and is passionate about sharing resources, guidance and wisdom of the creative path with others. Connect with her: @BellePirri on Twitter or creativespiritualwomen.com
