Stop The Madness: Let's Quit Killing With Kindness with Liv Lane

Hello lovelies! I hope this Monday is treating you well, it feels like Spring here on the east coast, it's warm, thunder & lightning pulled me out of sleep early this morning, I am absolutely loving it! Even though Spring is weeks away, let's turn over a new leaf... today. I am thrilled to have Liv Lane from Choosing Beauty stand up & speak at our Kind Kindred table today. What she has to say is so important. When I received her post last week, I was like... YES, YES... YESYESYES!... while reading it. This is such a strong message & I urge you... if you are living this way, just STOP. Start small, like Liv suggests, it will unlock your soul, your soul will yawn joyfully & beauty will spill in. Thank you so much Liv, for having the courage to write & share this passionate message here on Kind Over Matter - Love you, & Love to all of you too, Amanda

Stop The Madness: Let's Quit Killing With Kindness

This morning, I heard a local radio DJ complaining about someone who had written a series of mean emails. The DJ told his co-host, "I could get angry or aggressive, but I prefer to kill ‘em with kindness." The co-host agreed. I cringed.

I know people who say this believe they’re taking the high road. But that age-old adage – "kill them with kindness" – still implies that you’re seeking revenge, just in a non-traditional way. Okay, so you’re not going to beat your foe over the head or engage in verbal warfare. Good decisions. But you still have a subtly devious plan: to confuse and bewilder your opponent with compliments and niceties. Perhaps all those saccharine-sweet gestures and comments will break down your rival’s willpower or cause him to flee the scene altogether!

Well, guess what happens when you feign kindness to fend off another person’s negativity? The act of being so disingenuous starts to eat away at you. You start to feel out of sorts and uneasy, wondering why the situation isn’t improving. To fill up that pit in your stomach and make yourself feel better, you find yourself gossiping about that person, tracking their every move, rehashing conversations in your head. Truth serum, people: your insincere kindness isn’t killing your antagonist; it’s killing you.

Here’s the problem: kindness is not meant to be used as a weapon. It is innate and unconditional, genuine and whole-hearted. Real kindness comes from a place of compassion and benevolence. It fills you up while lifting others up.

On several occasions this school year, my eight year old has come home feeling deflated by mean comments from a classmate. When this happens, I remind him that the main reason kids try to hurt other kids – with words or actions – is because they themselves are hurting inside. Same thing with adults (you’d think we’d eventually grow out of it!). No one on Earth who feels secure and loved feels a need to create drama or be unkind. Appreciating this universal truth kicks your compassion for others into high gear and frees you from the chains of "playing" nice.

Try this on for size: when someone makes you feel bad, allow yourself to feel bad for them. Wait – what?? I know – it sounds odd and feels uncomfortable at first (but hey - no more so than living a lie in an attempt to kill someone with kindness). Now, I’m not telling you to shut up and put up with another person’s nastiness. I’m saying that before you respond, remind yourself that drama queens and bullies have one thing in common: damaged, bleeding hearts. So, before you give in to that guilt trip or react to those untruths they’re spewing, ask yourself these questions:
  • Does it make sense to fight someone who’s already wounded?
  • Would I benefit in any way from escalating the tension between us?
  • Am I going to let another person’s antics have power over me and my amazingly resilient heart?
  • Could I find comfort and instigate change by being gracious, grateful and caring?
Recognizing that this person is hurting deeply enough to lash out is important for your own sanity (though there’s no need to verbalize this to the person; let them figure out their own issues). On top of that knowledge, remembering that you’re far too wise and strong to let their negative talk and tricks have power over you can be deeply transformational. You’ll actually want to be authentically considerate in your responses. Not because you want to kill them with kindness, but because you want to bless them with kindness.

It may take time. It might take patience. It will take courage. But anytime you genuinely connect with another human being, walls crumble and hearts open. Real kindness moves mountains. Even grouchy ones.

Spin Your Story : I'm Going Home

Guest post by Tricia Karp of spokenyou.com.

Home. A word carrying connotations of comfort. Groundedness. Safety and security. A sense of belonging to my tribe. Something I took for granted until seven years ago when I crammed all my belongings into my little hatch back and drove for two days to the place of my dreams. Paradise. A stunning coast line, overlooked from the lush hinterland hills. Thick yet soft humidity, blooming frangipani trees and bouganvillea bushes bursting with hot pink and deep purple. A haven for spiritual seekers, a cave in which to hide and heal, heaven for creative types and those who want to live by their own rules, and a place where women who couldn't get pregnant before just do. An old Aboriginal birthing ground.

Unbeknownst to me, I came here to heal. To shed old skins. To recreate and reinvent myself. To meet a wonderful, good man and become his wife. To birth a fiery, adorable little girl, with wild curls and spotty socks that don't match anything else she's wearing. To uncover my true gifts and shamelessly release them to the world.

Seven years. A magical number, imbued with a propensity for testing, reassessing, getting out the measuring stick and seeing how life shapes up. The verdict? My work in paradise is done. I am being called home. To the place I grew up. To the city. To do my work in the world. To go hard with my career. To give my darling girl more access to her much-loved grandparents and cousin. To offer her more opportunities than this little country town could ever provide.

I've longed for this. Life in paradise hasn't always been easy. Surrendering to reinvention never is.

Speaking my need - to move on - terrified me. The thought of speaking up for what I wanted created jolts of fear about potential consequences. Would me wanting what I want mean the dissolution of my precious little family of three? It was excruciating.

"How?" I kept asking myself. "How can this happen? My husband would never move!"

I shoved it down until I couldn't any longer. The muscles in my lower back seized. My body was telling me the time had come. My heart racing, I spoke my truth.

Magic happened. A miracle, perhaps. Amid a few weeks of intensity, tears, prayers and wild emotions, I held strong. I reminded myself "This is where I stand. I know what I know." My husband, wanting the best for us, and seeing the potential for him to be much bigger in his life, concurred. We are moving home. To my home. It isn't his, but with the three of us together, it will be.

Lucky me. The love I feel for my man right now is profound. It's a deep, quiet respect. An understanding between the two of us, acknowledged with a momentary meeting of our eyes. Or an unexpectedly vulnerable and tender smile.

In myself I feel solid. I'm standing up straight and tall. A new confidence emanates from my very being. I know that standing up and stepping out, to speak the truth isn't always honored. This time, mine was.

I'm going home.

Wish there was a plan for turning your dreams & ideas into ACTIONS? There is.

I am so excited to share this with you all! Tara, you all know her from Scoutie Girl, & you may have even taken her Free Creating Action eCourse... is launching her newest course today:

The Art of Action

Tara is the Action Master, the woman is amazing - a DIY culture & lifestyle design expert, she took action on her goal to create business that would allow her to stay home with her daughter. Now, she fully supports her family - on track to take home 6 figures this year. She will show you how to turn your intentions & information into ACTION.

She so graciously asked me to be part of the Action Artists Team, that you can see here, in the right sidebar. She will be posting a clip from an interview that we did together soon, I'll let you know when that goes up! If you'd like to hear the full interview head on over to the The Art of Action & register! It's going to be awesome!

I polled my Facebook lovelies over the weekend with this question:

Have you ever felt "stuck" creatively? If you had the chance to ask someone that was full of momentum & extremely prolific in their craft one question about "creating action" (overcoming obstacles, blocks, finishing a project, etc.) - what would that one question be?

Well today, Tara is here to answer YOUR questions!

Brigitta Kral asks: Do you follow any process for getting an idea out of your head and onto/into the medium with which you work? If so, what? If not, how do you accomplish this?

Tara
The short answer: I keep a journal.

The longer answer: My ideas are always works in progress. The first time they enter my journal they tend to find their way to page with lots of other idea friends. This is where I jot down inspiration while I'm working on something else. If I didn't get it out of my head, I would forget it AND I wouldn't be able to focus on my current project.
The next time they show up in my journal, it's often in the form of an outline. Sometimes it's a project outline, sometimes it's a few quotes, sometimes it's a date by date working calendar. The outlines tend to morph a few times too - but I figure every time the idea pops up, it's getting a little closer to actual execution.

From there, outlines turn into actualization. The process on that is a little fuzzier - it depends on whether I'm crowdsourcing the project or whether it's something I need to meditate on or whether it's a more detailed research project.

Living with the idea & allowing myself the freedom to mold it & shape it with my pen give me both an organized process & the organic creation I crave.

-

Mae Chevrette asks: Sometimes I'm not sure if trying to force momentum is productive or counter-productive. I would love to know to what extent you push yourself to overcome a creative rut, and at what point do you choose not to force it and just let it ride itself out?

Tara
Generally, forcing the creative process is counter-productive. But ONLY if you're talking about the creative process - not the process of execution, more on that in a bit.

I deal with creative ruts in two extreme ways: I check in & I check out. For me, going for a walk, working out, listening to music, reading, is all "checking out" from the work of creating & finding inspiration. It almost inevitably leads to either creating or inspiration but the "doing" isn't either.
Other times, I check in. I get really into my network - asking questions, floating thoughts, answering questions. Finding that place of connectivity tends to get my juices flowing just enough that I can discover the needs & ideas that are right in front of my face.

As for the process of execution, sometimes you do have to force that. Your block doesn't come from not knowing what to do or how to do it - it comes from fear, from overwhelm, from self-imposed pressure.

Those problems are just smoke.

Push past them & you'll see that, on the other side, is freedom to do the work you WANT to do.

-

Kim Stickrath asks: I just came off a series of projects that I'd been working on since last spring, and I just couldn't stop or get away from the writing. It was great and scary all at once. Now that those projects are done, and I am getting ready to work on a related project...my momentum has dropped. I find that as much as I want to do this project, I'm stalling on it. How do you keep your drive and motivation running high when, well, life keeps "happening" in full force around you?

Tara
You don't. Stalling is just another form of self-sabotage. And sometimes, self-sabotage is exactly what you need. You need to say, "this isn't what you're ready for right now. Stop."

Approach your project with gentleness. You'll pick it up when you're ready to do your best work, until then gently allow yourself to embrace the life that's happening right now. Play.
Once that happens, you'll have the space you need to pick up your project with joy & enthusiasm.

If delaying the execution of the project isn't possible, you can - again, gently - examine what it is that's making you stall. Is it fear? Are you bored? Is the project out of your control?

Figure out what's causing that performance block & you'll have an idea of what you can change to push past the problem.

Kindness Gets You Ahead with Jonathan Mead

Happy Monday all you lovely beings you! If you have work or school off today due to President's Day, that's even better, I hope you are enjoying it! Either way, take the time to read this fascinating & inspiring story about an act of Kindness that George Washington carried out, it will surely warm your heart & stick in your mind forever.

Today, Jonathan Mead is joining our Kind Kindred family! I came across Jonathan last summer via his post on Zen Habits titled, How to Stop Acting Like Such a Big Baby, which affected me greatly. It was even the match that sparked one of my mantras for this year: If you feel a petty complaint erupting from your throat, breathe it back down with Love. So, I am really digging that he & his blog got a jump start because of a Kind act, so awesome! Too, he is generously giving away his book, Reclaim Your Dreams, to TWO commenters below! Thank you so much for sharing this amazing story with us Jonathan. Big Love & Peace to all of you, Amanda

take my hand, originally uploaded by Justin.Williams.

Kindness Gets You Ahead

A lot of people ask me how in less than six months of blogging I got to be a regular contributor on Zen Habits (one of the top 10 blogs on the web). I'll tell you how below, but it really came down to one thing: kindness.

When I first started blogging I was amazed at the level of generosity there was in the social web. People authentically wanted to help. Not to get ahead or as some ploy to gain favors, but just to be genuinely kind. I was inspired by this attitude and begin ending all of my emails with "Please let me know how I can help."

Mary took me up on that offer. She was also new to blogging and had been struggling with getting her website working properly. She'd hired an agency to help her with tech related stuff but they were often unresponsive or unhelpful. So when things were broken I'd do my best to help her fix them. I didn't expect anything, or anticipate any future payback. I already knew that kindness is its own reward. It just feels good to help.

A few weeks later Mary asked if I would be interested in writing regularly on Zen Habits. Apparently Leo was looking for a staff writer and wanted recommendations. I didn't know at the time but Mary had become close friends with Leo and was helping him with several projects. So of course I said hell yes. I would love to reach an audience like that. Not just because of the scale, but because the people who read Zen Habits are generally awesome people.

Mary repaid that kindness when she recommended me to Leo and I got the position. I was able to grow my blog from less than a thousand readers to over ten thousand readers in a few short months.

There was no expectation, but kindness is contagious. The more you give, the more others want to give back.

I'm incredibly grateful for what Mary did for me and the opportunity Leo gave me. I know my blog wouldn't be where it is today without their help.

While I truly believe that kindness is its own reward, it's also something that gets you ahead. And it's usually when you don't intend for it to.
