Hello Lovelies, I hope this Monday is treating you extra nice. The sun is out here this morning & I couldn't be more pleased to see its shining face! Today, I am excited to share that Raam Dev is joining our Kind Kindred circle to share this beautiful story about how he found Kindness in the backstreets of India when he least expected it. If you don't know Raam, I encourage you to take a stroll over to his About Page, his story is absolutely incredible, I know you will be as intrigued as I was the first time I read it. Thank you so much Raam, for sharing your story with all of us, I am wishing you love & all the best on your journey & objective of building a Community of Passionate Changemakers - I'm on your side. Enjoy, xoxo, Amanda

Discovering Kindness in the Backstreets of India

As an American tourist in a developing country it was difficult to feel treated as an equal. Every stranger who approached me seemed interested in one thing and one thing only: Money.

This was my first time outside the United States and I was traveling alone in India, slowly making my way from Bangalore in the south up through Goa and Bombay further north.

After spending two months dismissing street vendors and ignoring taxi drivers, the loneliness began creeping in. Where were all the people with a desire for real human connection? Where was all the curiosity and kindness?

When I stepped off the train in Udaipur (a small city in Rajasthan, between Bombay and New Delhi), I decided that I was going to do something to find that human connection and, after checking into my hotel, I ventured outside to explore.

All the main streets were overflowing with vendors hawking their wares and catering to tourists. Every single one seemed to assume that anyone who looked out of place was interested in spending money and filling their bags with souvenirs.

I was traveling with a small backpack and a monthly budget of $200, so I could neither afford to buy nor fit anything into my bag. But of course they didn't know that. They were just doing their job and trying to feed their family.

Out of frustration, I stepped off the main street into a very narrow alley. I had no idea where it led, but I was getting desperate for an authentic connection and I was ready to look anywhere.

I walked through a maze that wasn't even on the map and emerged on street that was clearly not frequented by tourists. "Finally," I thought, "a place where I can walk around in peace".

Before I could finish that thought, I heard someone yell out to me. My well-developed street hawker guard went up and I ignored the voice, keeping my eyes looking forward and pretending that I didn't hear anything.

He called out again. This time I looked in his direction. Something felt different. I didn't feel intimidated or pressured. When he waved me over, his gesture felt sincere.

That was enough to get me to stop and hear him out.

The store behind him was filled with fabrics of varying colors. A sewing machine sat just inside the door. A young tailor in his mid-20s, he spoke in broken English with a soft, leisurely voice. His smile came and went as he spoke, not permanently glued to his face like a stranger trying to sell me something.

We started chatting and within a few minutes I found myself sitting on the stairs to his shop exchanging stories of my travels and listening to him tell stories from his childhood. Between topics we would both stop and quietly look around, sharing silence, watching people walk by, and soaking in the moment.

An hour passed and a few of his friends arrived. They all invited me inside to join them for an afternoon cup of tea. Sitting on small wooden crates, we chatted, exchanged smiles, and laughed. I knew none of these people and none of them knew me, yet this felt like family.

After a few hours I returned to the hotel, dazed and in awe with what had just happened.

I walked by that shop an absolute stranger, suspicious and on edge, feeling overwhelmed and alone in a foreign country and in an unfamiliar city. But all of that changed in the span of a few hours through the kindness of one individual.

That one person reached out to me not as a tourist, not as an American, and not even a male. He reached out to me as a human being, satisfied to simply share the company of another soul, exchanging smiles, stories, and a piece of the short time we both have on this planet Earth.

That day his kindness changed everything. I began viewing travel from a different perspective, more aware of my own stubbornness and wrongly-placed assumptions about the world and the people around me.

When we stop being self-centered and stubborn, kindness flows naturally. When we open our hearts and give of ourselves freely from a place of compassion, curiosity, and with an awareness that we are all connected, kindness will envelope the moment and flow into our lives.

Living with absolute sincerity and reaching out to others with no ulterior motive or expectation of receiving something in return is the only way we can experience real fulfillment. Every time we breathe, we're given a golden opportunity to change the next moment, to embrace those around us and see them as equals, and to exhale into the world an expression of love, compassion, and kindness.

Owl & Fawn

I learned to crochet when my daughter was born 11 years ago. My grandma taught me- over the phone! I am a web consultant/ photographer by day, and at night when all the kids are in bed, I spend my time whipping up hats and scarves. I love using huge crochet hooks and really chunky yarn! I also like to try all kinds of fibers- acrylic, wool, cotton, bamboo... and soon I'll be offering items made with hand spun yarns.

never dull your shine for somebody else

, originally uploaded by ƒenk.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

How to Rock Kindness at Your Day Job + Free Compliments Poster (The Break Room Edition)

Free Compliments Poster : BreakroomEdition

download:
Free Compliments Poster - Break Room Edition
PDF

Before I became a work-at-home mama I rocked a day job in health care. I was a nurse's aide in quite a few different settings. I worked all three shifts throughout the 7 years that I worked in the field. I worked in a handful of nursing homes, personal care homes, a rehabilitation center, an assisted living complex & then finally, in home health care. I really did love helping people but it was a SUPER stressful profession, both mentally & physically, especially when we were understaffed. What would make or break my day would be who was on with me that shift. At one point, during my first year of work, I worked with SUCH an amazing TEAM. Like, we got shit done, we didn't skimp, we all loved our residents to pieces & we worked TOGETHER to finish our tasks & raise the quality of our residents' lives. We went that extra mile to make each other smile too. It was truly a beautiful thing.

Last weekend I made a call out on both Twitter & Facebook asking my followers how they were shown Kindness in the work place. I was blessed to read some amazing stories, I mean really, really amazing, if you visit KOM's Facebook you can scroll down & read some of them. Thank you so much to the lovelies that shared them! Please, leave them again in the comments if you wish! All the stories that were shared helped this post bloom!

Now, I know that sometimes you are overworked, stressed & feel that you don't have time or maybe you feel that your co-workers don't deserve a damn thing because as Meg via Twitter put it, [they should] act like the adults they are, instead of like the mean spirited high schoolers they once were. Believe me, I've been there. It can be really difficult but if you reach deep inside yourself, you can show them some kindness too. I like to remember this proverb when faced with someone that is unkind...

Love me when I least deserve it, because that's when I really need it.
Swedish Proverb

Another great reminder is Kate Swoboda's Love Letter to the World that I made into a printable last summer, download it here!

Kindness really is contagious, maybe you can get the bug to spread in your place of work by taking one of the steps below! It won't hurt, I promise!

Start Small. Most of the things I am about to mention will take you no more than 5 minutes or less to do. Say thank you, make coffee, tidy the break room, do the dishes, have a sense of humor, SMILE MORE, complain less, don't gossip, give praise freely. Be Kind, Be Kind, BE KIND. You probably spend an upwards of 2,000 or so hours with your co-workers a year. You should really try to make it a positive experience for yourself & those around you.

Bring Food. Bagels, chocolate, fruit, donuts, chocolate, cookies, cupcakes, a veggie tray... chocolate! It doesn't matter what it is. Bring it. Share it. Bake something & bring it in (Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes!?), a covered dish, anything will surely be a huge hit! You don't have to go all out either, stop at your local grocery store pick up some fresh or frozen bagels & a tub of cream cheese, a box of donuts, pick up some coffee on your way to work or better yet, offer to run out & pick up a coffee or food order.

Leave Little Gifts or Inspiration. The above Free Compliments Poster would be a great start! ;) Any of my freebies, really! You don't even have to be crafty to make these Paper Roses. It's almost Valentine's Day, find some cute free printable Valentines, get all old school & write them out. If you're shy (like me!) you don't even have to make yourself known, do it on the sly, giggle to yourself when everyone is talking & wondering who the do-gooder is.

Thank You Notes, originally uploaded by meddygarnet.

Start a Gratitude Board. As I was scouring Flickr for photos to feature in this post I ran across the one above. Her company has a "Thank You Board" - whomever has the most notes each month wins Employee of the Month & is rewarded. Of course, whomever has been the employee of the month the most throughout the year becomes the employee of the year at the end of the year! Love this idea, so much.

The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.
William James

Show Your Appreciation. This harmonizes with the suggestion above because I feel that is extremely important & want to emphasize on it more. Maybe one of your co-workers showed you how to do something or to get more personal, shared with you a great book, song, poet or movie that you deeply enjoyed. Let them how much you appreciate them by saying Thank You, maybe you can return the favor. Show them how grateful you are by acknowledging them, you can pass along the goodness they shared with you to someone else. When you do, don't let the person that turned you on to or helped you with something out of the story. Not only is it one of the most important parts of the story but by doing so, the gift of appreciation will continue to be given to them & that my friends, is truly a beautiful thing.

No one who achieves success does so without acknowledging the help of others. The wise & confident acknowledge this help with gratitude.
Author Unknown

Share Yourself & Encourage Others to Do the Same. Open up, let yourself be seen. This will make you vulnerable but it will also be the only way you will connect on a deeper level. Hang photos of your loved ones, display mementos of your interests & passions (ummm, don't go overboard though!) If you have an office, keep your door open as much as possible. When folks arrive make them feel welcomed. (Did I mention chocolate?!) Share the important things in your life. Ask about the important things in your co-workers' lives. Sometimes all anyone needs is someone to talk to.

So, if you rock a day job... commit yourself to being Kind. It really does go a long way.

How have you been shown Kindness in the workplace? Share your experiences in the comments below! I can't wait to read them!

Big Love,

nurture the seeds

closer, originally uploaded by oprisco.

No kind action ever stops with itself. One kind action leads to another. Good example is followed. A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, & the roots spring up & make new trees. The greatest work that kindness does to others is that it makes them kind themselves.

I have fallen down enough to get more comfortable with it, to know how productive it can be, how necessary it is to growth. Tuesday's Tunes with Iron & Wine

tuesday's tunes

Advisory: Some of these performances contain language not suitable for all audiences.

Iron & Wine's (aka Sam Beam's) new album, Kiss Each Other Clean was released today. I had tweeted about the above performance on Saturday & one of my lovely followers, Sara, thanked me for turning her on to Sam, she hadn't heard his music before. Shortly after, Suzanne tweeted & thanked me as well. I tweeted them both back, so excited because I knew the journey they were about to take. I took it back in 2005 when I discovered his music in a small & awesome independent record store called, City Lights Records (click the link for short doc on the store, Ken is one kool kat) that I frequented. Sadly, the store closed it's doors last year. So, yes, I bought Our Endless Number Days & that same week went back to buy the album & EP that came before it. I have had a love affair with his music since. When Kurt & I's love was all shiny & brand new, we drove across the country diggin' on it. When Zenin, my oldest, was just a few weeks old I would rock & dance with him in my arms around my dark kitchen every evening to The Shepherd's Dog, by track 3, he was out. His music has been there through some of the best & most difficult parts of my life. I hold it close & in the highest regard.

Now, as a disclaimer, I'm no music guru. I'm not up on all the newest & hip stuff that's out there, but I do love what I love. I, too, LOVE turning people on to new music. So I started this feature to share some of my favs with you because maybe, before now, like the two lovelies above, you hadn't heard of Iron & Wine. Oh are you in for a treat if you haven't!

Thanks for listening, big love,

Every time I listen to this song my eyes well up with tears because it is so, so beautiful.

speak your truth, even if your voice shakes

, originally uploaded by Jack.ed.

It is time to speak your Truth. Create your community, be good to each other. And do not look outside yourself for the leader. There is a river flowing now very fast. It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid. They will try to hold onto the shore. They will feel they are being torn apart and will suffer greatly. Know the river has its own destination. We must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open and our heads above water. Now, see who is in there with you and celebrate.
